Mathematics education in California is undergoing a seismic shift as the state approves new teaching guidelines that aim to imbue a sense of social justice into the curriculum. The State Board of Education gave the green light to this novel framework, leading many to wonder if we are dumbing down our children’s education under the pretext of inclusivity. With this new method, two plus two doesn’t necessarily have to equal four. It’s a free-for-all, a system where we prioritize making everyone feel involved over pushing them to excel.
In the grand scheme of things, this approach does nothing to prepare our students for real-world challenges. The new guidelines are set to nurture an upcoming generation unqualified for competitive job markets. After all, try finding a coder or a plumber who can’t do basic math. We are stripping our children of fundamental skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic in our misguided quest for educational equality. California’s equity-based math framework might just be another misguided step that pushes us closer to a future where most Americans are ill-equipped to navigate the world of work and life.
