Hotlips Pizza, Portland’s 39-year-old iconic joint, is waving goodbye to three of its five locations. Why, you ask? Well, it seems the good ol’ trifecta of economic woes, labor shortages, and our dear friend COVID-19 have taken a toll on this slice of Americana.
Co-owner Jeana Edelman shared the heartbreaking news with us mere mortals, announcing the very first layoffs in the company’s history. Let’s take a moment of silence for the fallen heroes of pizza. It’s a shame that these once-thriving locations at Northeast 33rd Avenue, Killingsworth Street, Hollywood District, and near Providence Park couldn’t withstand the crushing weight of, you know, reality.
You’ve got to hand it to the hardworking employees who’ve given their blood, sweat, and tears to the pizza cause for years, even decades. The least we can do is tip our hats in gratitude, while shedding a tear or two for the tragic twist of fate.
But hey, at least we can look back on a time when local ingredients and fruit sodas were enough to keep a business afloat. Those were the days, my friends.
