Pinellas Park Loses a Walmart – Economics or Retail Theft?

Walmart is feeling the pinch, as they’ve decided to shut down their Neighborhood Market in Pinellas Park. Apparently, the store just didn’t live up to their sky-high financial expectations. So, come March 10th, they’ll be locking the doors for good at the 6900 U.S. Highway 19 N location.

Walmart, with over 5,000 stores nationwide and 380 in Florida alone, must be quaking in their boots, right? Well, not so much. Pinellas Park is still home to seven Walmart Supercenters and five Neighborhood Markets. As for the 71 employees at the closing store, they’re being thrown a lifeline with the chance to transfer to another location. Silver lining, anyone?

Now, we all know retailers have been tightening their belts in the face of recession fears. Walmart even mentioned in their 2022 annual report that COVID-19 and inflation could impact consumer spending this year. CEO Doug McMillion even hinted in a CNBC interview back in December that an uptick in retail theft might lead to more store closures. But, rest assured, Pinellas Park’s closure isn’t tied to that particular issue.

And for all you Tampa Bay Walmart fans, don’t worry! There are no other closures planned in the area, according to Walmart Communications Director Brian Little. He said, “We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our 6900 U.S. Highway 19 N, Pinellas Park location. We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on” Good to know, right?
