In a daring move, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is set on contracting with San Francisco-based non-profit, Urban Alchemy, a group that hires formerly incarcerated individuals to patrol troubled areas. The intent behind this is to address street-level issues such as addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. There’s a belief that these ex-cons, some of whom served time for the very challenges they’re now supposed to address, are the most suited for this job. Yet, critics are unconvinced. With instances of the San Francisco counterpart facing lawsuits for various misdemeanors, the validity of Wheeler’s strategy is debatable. Will Urban Alchemy become Portland’s golden solution, or is the city heading towards an avoidable disaster?
