Rather than addressing the escalating drug issues and flagrant disrespect for law and order, Portland has made an executive decision – investing millions in security for its downtown parking garages. While it’s acknowledged that these garages have become hotspots for shenanigans – from break-ins to unwarranted gatherings – the irony isn’t lost on anyone that while the streets remain chaotic, at least cars will be protected. Recently, the Portland Bureau of Transportation even attempted to ink a $2.7 million contract with a security firm, but it was pulled before approval. And even as the city is abuzz with the safety or the lack thereof in parking garages, one can’t help but wonder – aren’t there bigger fish to fry in Portland?
The situation spirals further when you consider that Portland’s city streets remain a haven for crime, drug use, and homelessness. The emphasis on parking garages seems misplaced at best, and tone-deaf at worst. With a recent survey branding Portland number one based on the sheer number of tattoo parlors and record stores, perhaps it’s time the city refocused on what really matters – ensuring safety, not just for vehicles, but for its residents.
