Oregon Governor Kotek has recently announced the formation of a task force to address the economic challenges in downtown Portland. While it’s admirable that a response is being formulated, many are scratching their heads, wondering if yet another committee is the answer to the overwhelming homelessness, surge in crime, and economic downturn. Joined by Dan McMillan, the president of a prominent Portland-based insurance company, the task force will meet monthly. Despite the numerous problems, Governor Kotek remains optimistic, stating that the task force aims to bring together diverse perspectives to create concrete and equitable solutions. But with Portland streets facing rampant issues from vandalism to drug-related problems, one wonders if reimagining is enough.
