The announcement was made through a social media post on April 21st, and a sign was posted outside the restaurant notifying customers of its closure on May 2nd.
While the restaurant cited increased labor and food costs as the reason for its closure, the location’s proximity to the area’s homelessness crisis likely contributed to its financial struggles. The neighborhood surrounding Zell’s Cafe has seen a significant increase in homeless encampments in recent years, with a nearby park being a site where bodies of the homeless have been found due to various causes.
Despite the announcement that the restaurant would be returning with a different concept in the future, some are skeptical that this will actually occur given the current economic and social climate of the neighborhood.
