In a recent WCCO report, Kira Mitchell delves into the rising issue of thieves targeting electric vehicle (EV) charging cables for their copper content. Despite the high cost of replacing these cables, which can reach up to $4,000 each, the thieves only manage to get a few dollars’ worth of copper from each theft. This problem is leaving EV drivers in Minneapolis and other areas struggling to find functioning charging stations.

Residents have compared this crime to other copper thefts, such as those from air conditioning units and streetlights, which have similar impacts on communities. The City of Minneapolis has replaced at least 44 charging cables and still has about 20 more to go, highlighting the ongoing nature of the problem.

Efforts to deter thieves include installing cameras, putting up signs, and ensuring recycling centers are vigilant about stolen copper. However, many believe these measures will do little to stop the determined thieves, who often face minimal consequences for their actions.
