Walmart Abandons Food Desert: Milwaukee Left High & Dry!

Oh, what a surprise, another Walmart store is closing down in Milwaukee’s northwest side, leaving those living in a food desert wondering where to find their next meal. The Silver Spring Drive location, smack dab in the center of a food desert, is set to close its doors by March 10. Locals like Diana Vance can’t help but sigh, “OK, another store closing in our neighborhood.”

In case you didn’t know, food deserts are areas lacking a decent supply of supermarkets. Bart Luttrell, a pedestrian shopper who depends on this Walmart for groceries, is now faced with the daunting task of finding a ride to the next nearest store. Can’t they catch a break?

Data from the City of Milwaukee in 2019 showed the existence of 13 food deserts. The USDA defines a food desert as an area where at least 100 households without vehicle access are more than a half mile away from the nearest supermarket. With the Walmart closing, that definition fits the bill perfectly.

It’s a bit of a pickle, especially for Meranda Gladney, who’s none too pleased about having to travel way out of her way for groceries when the Walmart was just a stone’s throw from her home. But hey, it’s just another day in the life, right?

A Pick n’ Save about 3.5 miles away is the closest grocery store that offers a similar selection to Walmart. Shoppers there may pay more than what they would at Walmart.
