It looks like the H Street Walmart in our nation’s capital is closing its doors for good at the end of March. District residents are left wondering where they’ll find groceries at such unbeatable prices, and how this closure will impact the local economy.
Terry Lynch, the executive director of the Downtown Cluster of Congregations, sheds some light on the situation. According to him, the H Street Walmart is a go-to shopping destination for many in the area due to its affordability. He’s concerned that this closure will be another obstacle for working-class residents trying to make ends meet in the city.
But hey, it’s not just DC feeling the burn. Walmart announced last month that they’ll be shuttering eight other stores across the country – in Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Arkansas – all because they didn’t meet financial expectations. Tough break, huh?
In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Felicia McCranie, the communications director for Walmart’s North and East U.S. divisions, expressed gratitude to the loyal customers of the H Street store. We’re sure they appreciate the sentiment as they’re left scrambling to find a new place to shop.
